How Hard is the RCMP Police Aptitude Test (RPAT)?

According to the RCMP, the RPAT covers common subjects and skills developed during the course of a general high school education, such as math, and English comprehension and composition. Other areas of the test focus on skills such as logic, judgment and observation.

The RCMP Police Aptitude Test is a semi-adaptive test. That means that the complexity or difficulty of the questions you are asked to answer change depending on how well you are doing on the test. If you are getting most questions correct, then the difficulty of questions will increase. If you are getting questions wrong, the difficulty will decrease. The relative difficulty of questions is taken into account when your overall test is scored.

The electronic version of the RPAT contains 50 questions. Questions are broken down into sections of 10. Each section can have questions from any of the areas tested on the RPAT (composition, comprehension, logic, observation, judgment and computation). Each section has a time limit of 15 minutes. The test is scored on a scale of 5.0. A minimum score of 3.2 out of 5.0 is required to pass.

So while the material covered on the RPAT may not be hard in and of itself, the test can get harder as you go along. Maybe you have been out of high school for a long time, and your knowledge of subjects like English grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and general math is weak. And the test is timed, meaning you have to be able to answer questions relatively quickly.

Don’t get lulled into a false sense of security and confidence leading up to this test. It is important to get a good mark. The better your mark, the better your chances of succeeding in the remainder of the RCMP hiring process.

• Start by reviewing your basic math skills. If you need help remembering and practicing how to do things like long division by hand, then we recommend you head over to Khan Academy and watch some videos. You NEED to be comfortable with doing all the following by hand: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. This includes working with whole numbers, fractions and decimals. You also need to be able to work with ratios, percentages and averages.
