The Registered Nursing School Aptitude Exam (RNSAE) is a aptitude test used by colleges and other educational institutions throughout North America to assess applicants to various healthcare programs such as nursing.

The RNSAE is designed to measure a candidate’s skills, abilities, knowledge and attitudes in areas deemed necessary to succeed in the chosen educational program, and ultimately in the chosen career.

The RNSAE consists of five parts:

  • Academic Aptitude

  • Spelling

  • Reading Comprehension

  • Information in the Natural Sciences

  • Vocational Adjustment Index

All told, the academic aptitude, spelling, reading comprehension and natural sciences portion of the RNSAE amount to 200 or so questions, with the Vocational Adjustment Index adding another 90 questions. The RNSAE is also timed, and you will have 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete all the questions.

The academic aptitude portion covers vocabulary, arithmetic and non-verbal reasoning. The spelling portion requires to choose the correct spelling of a word from a list of misspelled words. The reading comprehension section involves reading a paragraph(s) on a subject, and then answer simple questions about that info. The natural sciences section covers basic topics from physics, chemistry, earth sciences, and biology (including anatomy).

The information tested for on the RNSAE is based on the subjects and knowledge students in North America should have learned in high school.

The RNSAE is designed by Psychological Services Bureau, Inc. Check out the company’s website for more information on its tests. Information on the makeup of the RNSAE can be found here.
